I usually have answers. This time I mostly have questions.
Last week, the New York State Senate expelled a leading anti-gay rights New York State Democratic Senator for beating up his girlfriend. For the first time in many years, the New York State Senate pulled together an overwhelming bi-partisan majority to throw this asshole out of government. A handful of Senators did vote in favor of the fool and among them were the other anti-gay rights Democrats.
While I'm not surprised, I not sure I understand the philosophical common ground between the trivialization of domestic violence by heterosexual men and their vocal and angry opposition to universal civil rights.
Here's my first question, jokes and sarcasm aside: What kind of self-proclaimed progressive Democrat crusades for Barack Obama, crusades against gay rights and trivializes heterosexual domestic violence?
New York State's "pro-traditional marriage" Democrats have almost to a man been censored for some degree of ethical improprieties, indicted for embezzlement and violent crimes and generally been exposed as corrupt, sexist and homophobic--and they are all to the man close allies of Barack Obama.
What must we learn from this? I'm convinced that there's some great truth in this conundrum that we've yet to articulate.
Here's my second question: What does this say about New York State politics?
Perhaps it's just my New York arrogance, but while the nation looks to Illinois and Louisiana as icons of political corruption and incompetence but they seem like rank amateurs compared to the freak show we call Albany. Here we have a very blue state, renowned for its progressive social programs, unique diversity and robust internationalism that has Democrats opposing gay rights and Democratic governors who are redefining hypocrisy and immorality for the world.
Obviously, not every politician who opposes gay rights is obsessively corrupt--although a disproportionate percentage seem to be, but the vast majority of Democrats who oppose gay right most certainly lean to the dark side of morality of ethics.
And what are Democratic voters thinking? Do they hate Republicans so that all the Democrats need do is find a convicted felon who eats children for breakfast?
I remember when the nation was horrified by the voters of Washington, D.C. who reelected their mayor after he had been arrested, convicted and imprisoned for possession of massive amounts of cocaine. Also an Obama Democrat, this convicted felon served out his term as mayor of D.C., eventually to become the only member of the D.C. City Council to vote against gay rights and marriage equality.
The arrest and conviction record among anti-gay rights politicians is staggering on two counts. First, a disproportionally large percentage of "traditional marriage" defenders are adulterers, illegal drug users and associated with corrupt financial shenanigans. Secondly, how and why do we as nation move forward as long as we turn a very blind eye to this fact?
Looking at the long list of anti-gay rights crusaders and their scandals, arrests and convictions: Mark Sanford, Larry Craig, Mark Foley, Ted Haggard, Marion Barry, several high profile New York State Democrats, James McGreevey (when he was straight), Jim Bakker and so on and so forth, they are clearly bereft of any moral or ethical core and yet our nation continues to kowtow to their anti-gay rights views.
Many will point to Republicans, African Americans and Evangelicals as the culprits who deny us equality when in fact, the very vocal minority that has successfully voted away our rights city by city and state by state are convicted felons, wife beaters, drug addicts, adulterers, embezzlers, extortionists and thieves.
