Wow. What a surprise. The brilliant strategy and tactics of our gay leadership has delivered yet another resounding defeat as the Washington state supreme court becomes the latest in a line of courts to deny queers full civil rights.
I've lost track of the number of times I've blogged about this but when is somebody up in those Ivory Towers of the gay advocacy groups going to realize that they are failing and badly need some revolutionary thinking, radical new strategies and very different tactics.
The gay advocacy groups on the subject of gay marriage are starting to sound like George W. Bush boasting about his successes in the Middle East, ever on the dole for more funding.
This battle is going to be won on a person by person basis and it is essential for each gay American to engage those who they encounter in an honest and open dialogue such that it becomes evident that gays have the same concerns and endure the same hardships and have the same hopes as all Americans. Once that happens, gays will no longer be viewed in the abstract as a group of people who seek to impose an unreasonable agenda. Only then will the fear that drives opposition to same-sex marriage subside.

I agree that the gay advocacy groups have done a poor job, but do you really expect them - or anyone else for that matter - to influence supreme court judges? I would hope that judges would be immune to political lobbying by anyone. The real work is supporting gay-friendly legislators who will pass fair legislation and supporting governors who will appoint fair-minded judges. God help us all if advocacy groups can sway the courts!

Thank you!!! I have been on that soapbox for some time. When will we re-evaluate our strategy? How many failed attempts will it take to figure... oops! we need a NEW DIRECTION? Perhaps it is time to look 'in' instead of 'out'.We are being sold up the river in an single, narrow minded attempt to catch the brass ring of marriage!? Instead we could be focused on addressing issues that will win...equality in housing, jobs, reducing violence against gay men and women and, fostering a community that gives a younger generation of gay folk a road map to coming out and real support for that effort.Until that time we are going to stay stagnent instead of moving forward. Let's look at reality...We need a new direction.
