New York City lawmakers have denounced California beverage maker, Redux for it's Cocaine brand energy drink. A bunch of whiny unhappy politicians and anti-drug experts claim that the drink glamorizes and encourages drug use. Joseph A. Califano Jr., chairman and president of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University went so far as to describe the drink as "insidious, disgraceful, irresponsible, reprehensible and disgusting."
The beverage in question competes with Red Bull, but contains three times more caffeine per ounce than Red Bull--and of course no cocaine; it just promotes it.
The President of Redux says it is absurd to think that the brand name would encourage anyone to use cocaine in a bar or club. And, teens, he emphasizes, know better.
As any marketing expert, including the Presidents of Bolivia and Columbia, will tell you, putting your brand on related merchandise in no way glamorizes or encourages product usage.
