You're right Richard, passing the hate-crimes bill means we won't get beat up [to put it lightly] without some justice on our side. It is one small step or crumb as you put it.

The bigger issue is that we are (still) 2nd class citizens. It's people like you that have that flame that burns with passion. We have a lot of work to do... still.

The hate crimes bill means that society and government still retain the right to beat the crap out of our rights, but individuals can't cause us harm (not that anyone's ever proven the deterrent effect of hate crimes laws).

Ya, I was ambivalent about this. It's great for people to see justice done in backward states where you get a medal for gay-bashing. But I don't think this law will actually prevent someone from attacking if they were already inclined to do so.
